The J R McKenzie Trust was established in 1940 by Rotarian Sir John McKenzie. As an independent philanthropic trust, it is able to support a very diverse range of organisations and initiatives. The Trust looks for opportunities to build relationships with the organisation it supports.
The founder ensured that Rotary would play an important part in the administration of the trust. The board includes a trustee from each of the Rotary districts, who chairs each regional panel. These panels provide crucial local input in grant-making decisions.
The Trust’s strategy is to focus all that it does as a trust, including grantmaking, on working towards a more socially just and inclusive Aotearoa New Zealand.
Over time the focus and the language of the Trust have expanded and changed but the current vision statement of contributing to achieving “a socially just and inclusive Aotearoa New Zealand” is still aligned with Sir John’s and later Sir Roy McKenzie’s original purpose.
The Trust is interested in partnering with those experiencing the greatest inequity, exclusion, and disadvantage in four communities of interest:
- Children, young people, and whānau
- Māori
- Pacific Peoples
- Communities that experience exclusion

Please note that the Trust does not fund Rotary programmes – applications must come from community organisations (they can be supported by Rotary).
