From the pen of District Governor Graham Jull:

Greetings fellow Rotarians and welcome to Spring.

We are now starting the third month of the 2018-19 Rotary year.

The month of September is Basic Education and Literacy Month.

Already, Elizabeth and I have been able to visit 24 clubs of the 51 in our great district. We have been overwhelmed by the welcomes we have received and the special functions that have been organised for our visits. This is indeed the highlight of the Governor's year.

Regardless of the varying sizes of the clubs, we are impressed by the range of projects and support all clubs are providing for their communities and the strong support for the Rotary Foundation and our humanitarian projects overseas.
The assets of Rotary which are you and me, are making a huge difference, so keep that inspiration going throughout this Rotary year.

I am thrilled that these two marvellous district champions have been awarded PHFs for all their hard work.

The Australia New Zealand Zone 8 Rotary Conference is being held in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia on 14-16th September 2018. There are 16 Rotarians from our district attending with similar numbers from the other five New Zealand districts.

DGE Peter Maxwell and Mary and DGN Grant Spackman and Wendy will continue their Governor training prior to the start of the conference and some of it will be provided by PDG Raewyn Kirkman.

From Elizabeth’s and my point of view, it is a great opportunity to meet up with the other New Zealand and Australian Governors with whom we have shared the Rotary journey over past two years.

The top topic will be discussion on the future of Rotary in New Zealand as we approach in 2021 100 years of Rotary in New Zealand. A working group, supported by RI and made up of representatives of all the District Governor groups, with DGE Peter Maxwell our representative, has been exploring a variety of strategy and structure options.  Rotary international has challenged us to address declining membership, the cost of Rotary and cultural barriers for young people joining Rotary.

This is an exciting opportunity for us to be innovative and bold so that Rotary in New Zealand and the Pacific Islands can flourish and prosper in our second century of service. When this working group has reported their findings, these will be reported back to your clubs and the consultation process will commence.

Please note: We have a new date for the D9930 Focus on Rotary Conference at the Claudelands Event Centre, Hamilton.

All details of the conference will be on our district website shortly. Please register early and plan your accommodation needs. Accommodation may be limited that weekend because of a Chiefs match on Friday night, so get in early. The programme will allow you to attend the game should you wish to do so.

A reminder, you have only to the end of September to say “Yes, we are in”   to PDG Mike Smith, 9930 Membership Chair.     mike1950@xtra.co.nz

As we travel around the district, I am recording a list of all the good projects and activities clubs are doing. Over the following newsletters, I will highlight some of them.
At all times with your projects in the community remember:

•    Be visible, distinctly ROTARY, leave no doubt that the service project is being carried out by your Rotary club.
•    Make sure your branding is current Rotary branding, large and bold.
•    Use the Rotary Days programme, film it, write it up, get local publicity and send to me so that I can highlight it at Focus on Rotary Conference, 15-17 March 2019.

Keep up the good work and together we can “Be the Inspiration”.

Best wishes,
