A commemoration ceremony was held on 5 June at the Whakatane Museum to celebrate the publication of the Time Capsule book.

The children who are the Guardians of the Time Capsule and are tasked with opening the capsule on the 5 June 2066 joined those people who made the time capsule a reality.

Alistair Hamilton led the project that saw a giant capsule interred in Wharaurangi on The Strand in Whakatane in June 2016. The capsule holds hundreds of envelopes put
there by people in the Whakatane District, which contain treasures and letters to be opened by their relatives of the future.
Seven year old Maya Paterson is the youngest of the guardians and will be 55 years old when the capsule is opened.

The Time Capsule was a Whakatane West Rotary Club project for the citizens of the Whakatane District and is the first of its size in Whakatane.

Whakatane Museum director Eric Holowacz told the guardians that “We are all living, breathing time machines” and emphasised the importance of the time capsule.
