Talking about projects – whilst we have some potential Global Grant applications in the pipeline – there is scope for more – but at Global and District Grant levels. Whilst it is now too late to apply for District Grant funding this year – it is never too early to start thinking and planning for next year!! You have seen the adverts “Shop early for Christmas to save disappointment” – well the same applies to Foundation Grants – plan early to save disappointment!

This month is Rotary’s Basic Education and Literacy Month – so what a good time to consider how these are essential for reducing poverty, improving health, encouraging community and economic development, and promoting peace.

Some facts –

  • If all women completed primary education, there would be 66% fewer maternal deaths.
  • A child born to a mother who can read is 50% more likely to survive past the age of five.
  • If all students in low-income countries left school with basic reading skills, 171 million people could be lifted out of poverty, which would be equivalent to a 12% cut in world poverty
  • 58 million children worldwide are out of school.
  • Even after four years of primary schooling, as many as 250 million children cannot read and write.
  • 781 million adults are illiterate.
Regrettably, we do not need to look far to find illiteracy in our communities. How about your club considers how they can change this situation? If you would like ideas and inspiration – look at the suggestions in My Rotary under Basic Education and Literacy.

Kind regards
