Urgent Appeal – Dengue Fever Outbreak: Stateless Hill Tribe Children in Northern Thailand Rescue Mission for Children in Mae Suai, is an NGO that provides care and education for the stateless children of the Akha Hill Tribe.
Some of the children in our care have recently been infected with Dengue Fever, which it is believed they have contracted at the local primary school from a nearby rice plantation, which is a breeding ground for Mosquitos.
Initially, four children were infected, but this number has grown to twenty, with several of the children being admitted to Chiang Rai Hospital. Because the Akha children are stateless, they have to pay for the medical carer they receive. This a financial burden that Rescue Mission for Children are unable to meet, and is not sustainable in the event of further cases of Dengue.
Project Starfish currently has a volunteer team en route to Northern Thailand, where they were scheduled to undertake a number of building and other projects to help with maintaining the aging infrastructure at the centre. The team’s immediate priority now is to provide any assistance they are able in order to care for the children who are recovering from Dengue. The team includes three nurses, so the team will be able to provide health care for the children and any medicines and other items needed to ensure the children can recover in comfort.
This urgent appeal has been initiated in order to gain funding support from Rotary clubs and individual donors who can help Project Starfish to meet the costs associated with the hospitalisation and care of our sickest children.
Please direct any donations via RNZWCS Limited (Rotary New Zealand World Community Services) Charity Services Reg. No. CC26860 Bank account no: 03 1702 0192208 01 Ref : 423
There is also a Give a Little page set up for donations:

Statelessness should not be a reason why children should not be able to receive the same medical care as other children with citizenship. In the absence of funds to assist, our children cannot be cared for. Please help us to help the children.
