Spud buckets are ready for collection at the premises of Underwood and Wilkins during normal working hours.
 
Please let Richard Underwood or Janie Story know how many buckets you have taken or reply to this email with numbers and I will pass it along.    
 
A BIG “Thank You” to East Bay Bark (on the Kawerau end of Onepu Springs Road) for supplying us the spud potting mix at a reduced price, according to those who know about these things, it appears to be very good quality so the spuds should be stupendous this year.

SPUD GROWER OF THE YEAR AWARDS 2017   CHARITY FUND RAISING EVENT IN SUPPORT OF LOCAL COMMUNITY PROJECTS ORGANISED AND HOSTED BY THE ROTARY CLUB OF WHAKATANE   THE COMPETITION:  
 
Competitors, on payment of the entry fee will receive an official potato growing container, together with a measure of official potato growing medium.  You will also be loaned one (1) seed potato.  The object is to grow the potato, in the container and medium, with the produce to be  submitted for judging at the special awards evening:   Awards Evening to be held on 5 December 2017, at 123C Paul Rd.    
 
THE RULES:  
i) You may submit as many entries as you wish, partners and interested friends are encouraged to participate and are cordially invited to the awards evening.
 
ii) Entry fee is $10.00 per official potato growing kit. All entries must be grown and submitted for judging in the official containers (bucket), with the plant tops still in place. The judge will do the harvesting and tip out the contents. Any entries found to have been tampered with may be disqualified or severely penalised, at the judges’ discretion.  
 
iii) Performance enhancing substances, special techniques, special fertiliser mixes, classical music, questionable practices and subversive activity to encourage growth are      permitted; - Container modification to enhance growth is also permitted.
 
iv) Seed potato and progeny remain the property of the organising committee and will be reclaimed by the organisers on the awards night.
 
v) Protests against the judges decision may be made within 30 seconds of judging, protest fee $10.00, protest committee’s decision will be final.
 
vi) All proceeds donated to Rotary Projects.  
 
PRIZE CATEGORIES:   Prestigious Major Prize and Trophy: - “Spud Grower of the Year” Award: - Single, largest potato by weight.    Minor Prizes, prize categories can change from year to year but can include:- 
 
Weirdest shaped potato, Ugliest potato, Longest potato, Most potatoes from one seed, Best novelty shaped potato and The hard luck award.   Special Award:- 
 
Presidents’ special award may be awarded for the outstanding endeavour in any category.
