Helen Russo, at St. Jude’s School, Tanzania.

Helen is Liz & Lloyd Wright’s daughter.

She has a Bachelor of Nursing.  Pediatrics is her main focus but she has done all sorts of nursing and community work.  She is at present working at Waikato Hospital in the Emergency Department.

Helen recently travelled to Tanzania to spend three weeks at St. Judes School.  This school relies completely on donations and sponsorship.

It was started by Gemma Sisia with three students and now has 1800.

The school’s mission is to promote educational leadership for underprivileged children – only one child from each family is allowed.  The school is English speaking and the grounds are immaculate.  The children get regular medical checks and Helen was part of the team doing this.  She faced a few challenges:  like “African time”, cultural barriers and poorly educated and limited support from the school.

The students all know about Rotary and the part we play in supporting their school.  But there is an ongoing need for financial and volunteer support.  Helen thanked the club for our donation to buy equipment which she took with her to Tanzania.
