Eulogy to Jack Dunlop, 1921—2017 It is said that old Accountants never die they just lose their balance.
Jack Dunlop, A Charter Member of the Ahuriri Club in 1968-69 under the classification of Catchment Services. President in the 1976–77 year. Jack went on to be 9930 District Governor 1982-83.

Over the years he was involved with our various projects and served the club in many roles but in particular as Treasurer, for which in 1995 he was presented with an “In Appreciation” plaque. All along, he always seemed to be somewhere up front leading the club, able to be consulted on any aspect of Rotary procedures etc. His service was recognised at various stages with a Paul Harris Fellowship Award and two further Sapphire Awards.

He always seemed to be a senior member of the club. There were many Rotary moments that were shared, acquaintances that developed into true Friendships. We recall many things he achieved, through Rotary, for the community in which he lived. In recognition of his involvement with Ahuriri Rotary the Jack Dunlop Rotarian of the Year award was created in 2009-10 and will live on in his memory. He was made an Honorary Member in 2009/10 year.

Never known to be without a wry smile and a cheery word for all and sundry. You would have to listen carefully to ensure you were getting his message because of his recall of events and or use of words. Especially, he will be remembered for how good he made us feel.

He was an exceptional Kiwi who valued teamwork, loyalty and earned respect from all he associated with. He truly carried the Rotary Motto of “Service Above Self” into his life and was the key to his Rotary Wheel Lapel Badge that he wore with distinction. If he had been born into Paul Harris's generation in Chicago he would surely have been one of his originals.

He upheld both the Four Way Test and the Object of Rotary. Jack was Called to Higher Service having completed his adventure in service and if he had thought about it, in the knowledge that he had fulfilled World International Presidents theme for 2017-18 ROTARY: MAKING A DIFFERENCE.

Jack could not help himself. Somewhere in the early 1990’s Jack got involved in the Rotary Project of setting up several if not all of the Probus Clubs in Napier. Became the first President in 1992/93 of what was then called the Combined Probus Club of Greendale, got elected onto the Board of Probus South Pacific and made many trips across to Sydney to attend meetings. He was given a Life Membership of the Greendale Club.

About 25 years ago there was a period when Jack was unable to park his car in his garage. With some help it was cleared and at the official exposure, former Ahuriri Rotarian Bill Small, read a specially written poem. Verily we say to you Jack (As long as you’re wired for sound) We’re here tonight to commemorate The exposure of this hallowed ground The spirit of one Paul Harris And the ghosts of others it’s said Have long filled the nooks & crannies Also the whole floor of this shed Marie must have promoted this (No more paper through this door) The only thing I want in here, Dunlop Is the car rubber on the floor And so your friends have gathered Around your “Firestone” and insist It’s been a “Goodyear”, Dunlop But we’re here to get you INTOXICATED!!

The above eulogy was presented by Stuart Claridge at Jack’s funeral on October 26th. The Rotary Club of Ahuriri extends its condolences to Jack’s wife Marie and their family in their time  of sadness
