Welcome to 2017 and the second half of this Rotary year.

For obvious reasons the monthly District Newsletter had a rest at the end of December, but after an enjoyable recess over much of the last month the wheels are turning again as Rotary clubs return to ‘Doing good in the world.’

Many clubs have had at least that first ‘social’ meeting around a BBQ to catch up with one another.

Social activities and fun aside now is a good time for club leadership teams to review what has been achieved thus far this Rotary year and to ensure strategies are in place to meet goals for the period to 30 June.

Rotary does not completely close down at this time of the year.  In our part of the world, this is an important time for the Youth Exchange team as they welcome home outbound students from their year away and farewell this year’s outbounds as they commence their special year in another country, and for most the first lengthy absence from parents.  We wish them all the best on their journey over the next year.

Many thanks to all who have promptly accepted invitations to attend this year’s District Conference at Whakatane over the weekend 31 March to 2 April.  At the time of writing just on 240 registrations have been received and with the event still almost 10 weeks away the numbers are tracking very well.  We have a good line-up of both external and internal speakers.  External speakers will include paediatrician Dr Johan Morreau, manager of N.Z Blackcaps Mike Sandle and pharmaceutical scientist, inventor, author & social entrepreneur Sir Ray Avery.  For those still planning to join us for a memorable weekend, remember the ‘early bird’ concessional benefit applies if you register and make payment by no later than 31 January.

At District level, Rotary will be busy over the next few months.  Beyond the normal activities and programmes of our District committees, extra events will include Rotary Foundation workshops being held in each Area during February, the South Pacific President Elect Training for incoming club presidents in early March and a New Zealand wide National Membership Seminar in mid-March.  Invitations to attend all these events have been issued.

Best wishes to all clubs for a successful and fun second half to this Rotary year of Rotary Serving Humanity.

Regards
