Greetings fellow Rotarians.

We are now starting the second month of the 2018-19 Rotary year.

Rotary Helps Daniel’s Patient Wait for Surgery

Hamiltonian anesthetist Alan Goodey is an Interplast volunteer who has been visiting Samoa for many years. One of the lucky recipients of surgery has been six-year-old Daniel.

It was a great outcome for the young boy, opening up a brighter future that will include less chance of social exclusion, better speech development, ease of eating and drinking, and more.

But his story illustrates the challenges of treating conditions that in countries such as New Zealand are dealt with quite early in a child’s life.

64 Years in Rotary and life in Whakatane
Our Guest Speaker was John Wilson (with assistance from Wally Sutherland) who spoke about his 64 years in Rotary and life in Whakatane as it was then and is now.

John was introduced by Jude who said that it was a great privilege to introduce John especially as he had been in Rotary for 64 years, which is longer than she has been alive…

John started his working life as an optometrist in Hamilton.  He did a lot of work visiting Waikato and the Bay of Plenty, and he would spend two days in Whakatane and Opotoki in premises that are no longer there.

Goods From Rotary Otumoetai Arrive
In March, Nola Ardern despatched a shipment to Niusawa High School, on Taveuni Island, on behalf of our club.

The shipment was several hundred girls knickers, and 60 metres of fabric, sewing threads, clasps and ribbons for the Home Economic Department, as part of the Days For Girls programme.

The picture on the right shows Joey, the wife of Taveuni Rotary member Geoffrey Amos, presenting the goods after they have arrived, to Vice-Principal Premila, and and the Home Economics teacher.

They were amazed at the variety and contents, and extremely grateful .   They send sincere thanks to Nola and the club.

Guess Who's Coming to Diner at Lake Taupo?
To all Rotarians who participated in the Guess who's coming to dinner on Monday, July 23 --- a very big thank you to you all.

The response was great with 35 members involved. Certainly very encouraging for future such events---- maybe on a Saturday next time or even a Sunday lunch???

My warmest appreciation goes to the hosts who responded to my request -- your generosity made my job so easy.  THANK YOU most sincerely.

The group I was with enjoyed fine fare, stimulating conversation and the friendliest of hospitality.   Mary Lockwoo

How to Host a Rotary Day
RI President Barry Rassin has challenged clubs and Rotarians to Be the Inspiration in 2018-19.

One of the ways Rassin would like to see clubs do this is by hosting a Rotary Day.

Any club big or small can host a Rotary Day, and several clubs can combine to share ideas, talent, and resources.

Rotary reef revisited
In the calm blue waters of Lamon Bay in Quezon Province, Philippines, lies a source of pride for local fishermen and a submerged salute to Rotary: an artificial reef in the shape of a Rotary wheel.

The wheel has helped restore the local fishing industry, which was devastated by large-scale commercial fishing vessels that used dynamite, cyanide, and fine mesh nets from the late 1990s through the early 2000s.
