Guest Speaker – David Hall talked about the Odeon Theatre complex.

Raey Wheeler passed away 3 years ago and even though she was 85 had not made any provision for someone to take over running the theatre.

The trustees asked David to take over for 3 months and he is still thee 3½ yrs later.

The Kerridges who originally started the theatre lived in Gisborne. Raey started off working for them and worked in the four theatres.

She was offered the Majestic Theatre which is now the Odeon. 25 years ago she spent $2 million to create 5 theatres which have a total capacity of 600 people at one time. The costs are high with the power bill one of the significant ongoing costs.

A projector bulb costs $3,800. David has introduced $10.00 Tuesdays and last Tuesday 1900 people attended. This has become a regular event in a lot of people’s lives as it gives them an opportunity to catch up with friends. Technology has changed significantly and David could run the theatre from home via his laptop. The Odeon will continue – patronage has increased over the past 3 years.

They are unable to insure the buildings as they can't afford the premiums. The theatre is due for earthquake strengthening which will mean it will have to close for a short period. The theatres meet requirements and it is just the entrance that needs strengthening.

David has tried to turn it into a community facility with free showing of The Whale Rider in conjunction with the Lotteries Commission and the Footrot Flats movie with proceeds going to Alzheimers. Organisations can raise up to $3,000 with a movie showing – the organisation is responsible for selling all tickets.

David urged everyone to make sure they have thought about succession for their business.
