Michael Cahill (Rotary Fairfield). D9930 Rotarian of the Year 2018-19.
 
The award was presented by IPDG Graham Jull supported by President Di Whitehead on Monday 19th August at the Fairfield Rotary Club meeting.
 
Mike Cahill was born in 1948 in Brighton, England. He joined the UK Army as a boy soldier in 1964 quickly rising through the ranks and attaining the rank of Warrant Officer Class 1 (RSM).

In 1993 he was commissioned from the ranks and worked as a Host Nation Liaison Officer for the US Forces.
He retired in the rank of Major, and was formally dined-out of the British Army at Her Majesty’s Tower of London in 2004, after 40 years’ of continuous military service.
 
He has served in:

•    Northern Ireland (1972-74)  -  Awarded a GOC’s (NI) Commendation in 1975.
•    Falklands War (1982) -  Sergeant Major of the Composite Port Squadron (Landing Ships)
•    Kuwait (1990-91) – UK Liaison Officer during ‘Operation Desert Storm and Desert Shield’. 
•    Iraq (2003) - Commanded a 100 strong Joint USUK Logistic Support Team for ‘Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation Telic’.  
 
Honours: 
-    Invested as a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE)
       in Her Majesty’s 2003 New Year honours.  
-    Awarded the Territorial Decoration in 2004.
 
Commendations: -  by His Excellency William S. Farrish, US Ambassador in London, to the UK Chief of the General Staff, General Sir Michael Walker.
Emigrated to New Zealand & joined the New Zealand Police Service, retiring in 2010 as the Waikato District Firearms Officer.

ShelterBox:

Mike has been actively involved with the international Disaster Relief charity ShelterBox since 2009. He has served as the ShelterBox District 9930 Chair (2010-2014), served as a ShelterBox New Zealand Board member (2011-2014). Currently, he leads the ShelterBox New Zealand Media team, helping to provide all their social media support.
 
Mike is married to Margaret Devlin and they were married in the Bay of Islands of New Zealand in 1993. Mike has been a member of Fairfield Rotary since 2009 and his interests include Rotary, ShelterBox, travel and golf, the latter being attempted with great enthusiasm, but not much skill.
 
Mike and Margaret have attended Rotary International conventions in Sydney, Seoul, Atlanta, Toronto and Hamburg 2019. They are also registered for Hawaii in 2020.
