Hi Member,

Welcome to the September newsletter from your Dynamic District Governor in "Club Mode"
Rotary District 9930 Newsletter September 2017

Greetings fellow Rotarians,

I have now commenced my official Club visits and am thrilled with the enthusiasm and commitment to Rotary and Making a Difference.

I also attended a meeting of the five Rotary Clubs in Rotorua to launch their commitment to the Kiwi Can programme in Rotorua.

Kiwi Can is a life skills and values programme delivered to primary school children (5-12 years old) in once a week, every week of the school year.

Congratulations to Rotorua, Rotorua Lakes, Rotorua North, Rotorua Sunrise and Rotorua West Rotary Clubs for combining their efforts to Make a Difference to the young people of Rotorua.

Rotary District 9930 adopted the Rotary Dictionary project in 2009 as a special emphasis on Literacy and it was enthusiastically taken up by all the clubs of the district.

The success of the project is proven with over 23,000 dictionaries presented to students in District 9930 schools to date.

The project fits well with Rotary International’s drive for ‘literacy development’ to be a major goal worldwide.

On Thursday evening 24th August, at the AGM of Mountain View Rest Home and Hospital, President Kevin O’Connor presented The Manager Jeanette Crooks with a Paul Harris Award.

The Rotary Club of Kawerau has always had a close association with Mountain View Rest as it is a Charitable Trust belonging to the people of Kawerau.

Most Rotarians have been involved in many aspects of the complex --- for example, there is the Rotary Lounge, they have bought equipment, assisted with functions held there, done gardening, built ramps, and assisted with fundraising; they help with the Blokes Shed for men affected by Alzheimers; and at present there are three Rotarians on the Trust Board – Jocelyn Coburn, Gail Dobbin and John Brierley.

This event, jointly promoted and managed by the Rotary clubs in Rotorua, provides the fellowship of lunch, an excellent speaker, and a superbly run auction of goods where the generosity of the people of Rotorua enables substantial donations to be made to a range of worthy beneficiaries.

Don't miss it - put the 17th November in your diary now and buy a ticket (or better still, make up a table with your friends)!

Spud buckets are ready for collection at the premises of Underwood and Wilkins during normal working hours.

Please let Richard Underwood or Janie Story know how many buckets you have taken or reply to this email with numbers and I will pass it along.

A BIG “Thank You” to East Bay Bark (on the Kawerau end of Onepu Springs Road) for supplying us the spud potting mix at a reduced price, according to those who know about these things, it appears to be very good quality so the spuds should be stupendous this year.

Challenge your friends. neighbors and workmates to grow prize winning spuds and to come along to the social event of the year SPUD NIGHT!!

Plastic and reconstructive surgery is the only pathway for many conditions, for opportunities to learn social skills, go to school, find work, provide for the family and participate in community life.

This surgery has the power to change the future of entire communities, yet for millions of those who need it most, it is simply neither available or affordable.

In the Asia Pacific region.  Birth defects, burn injuries, trauma injuries and the like, are all treated by volunteer Interplast teams and make a difference not just to one life, but to the lives of the family and the community in which they live.

The Rotary Club of Te Awamutu is who. And some Giraffes.

Depending on interest, there may be several hosts. The host prepares the main course and attendees (four or six) bring either an appetizer, salad or dessert.

Attendees know who's home they are going to but the hosts don't know until they answer the door.

A great way to get to know your fellow Rotarians in a relaxed setting!

We have had a great time with the Aussie students on this year’s Safari.

We tried all manner of means to scare them.

We put them in a jet boat in a rainstorm & drove it at 80kph. Once the pain has gone, it does wonders for the complexion, or so I’ve heard.

We strapped pieces of wood to their feet & sent them off down a mountain in a blizzard. We returned to the bus to find it snowed in & had to be escorted down the mountain by using a snow plow as the reserve breaking mechanism. We then tried cooking them in hot pools.

Another very successful and enjoyable function with four representatives from Youthquest Hawkes Bay (the recipients of the Community Grant which will be used to purchase a new van), along with representatives from most of the Art-x sponsors and Jonathon Bell from the Eastern & Central Community Trust who has also made a significant contribution of $18,000 towards the cost of the van.

Immediate Past President Chris Price made the presentation of the Greenmeadows Rotary Club’s cheque for $20,000 to Lauren Hibbard chair of Youthquest HB. Lauren thanked Greenmeadows Rotary and Eastern & Central Community Trust for their generosity which will allow Youthquest to replace their aging van, an essential item for running their programmes.

After a conversation in Hastings, The Prime Minister, Rt Hon Bill English, said he will make an appointment to discuss a financial pledge to end polio.

Talking to Rotarian Max Patmoy of the Ahuriri Club, Mr. English was given letters from District Governor Leonie Tisch, Past District Governor Keith Owens and Past District Governor Mike Smith. The Prime Minister said he was well aware of the global polio initiative.

Mr. Patmoy said the Prime Minister was "very keen and receptive".

A group of Rotarians will meet Mr. English, after the elections, to discuss the initiative options.

We've created a new global ad campaign called "People of Action."

The campaign is based on research that revealed that while many people have heard of Rotary, few actually understand what Rotary clubs do.

By downloading our materials in the Brand Center, you can begin telling your club's story in a consistent, compelling way.

Here's what you need to know
Work with local print media ad representatives to place these full-color ads in community magazines and newspapers.

2-8 October is Rotary Reconnect week! This annual event is an opportunity to invite former Interactors, Rotaractors, RYLA participants, and other program alumni to renew their connection to Rotary.

Host an alumni networking night, plan a service project to take action together, or invite alumni of all ages to your next club meeting.

When you stay connected with alumni, you not only cultivate new membership opportunities and network with proven leaders, you also help alumni discover new ways to give back through Rotary.

The Water & Sanitation Rotarian Action Group (WASRAG) was formed in 2007 by a group of Rotarians, recognized by Rotary International, and focused on WASH projects.

Since then it has facilitated many hundreds of projects – helping clubs find partners, ensuring sustainability, stressing the importance of a needs-driven approach, and developing best practices.

We encourage a holistic, integrated approach in which water is not the end in itself, but is rather the means of a better life and livelihood in the community.

Most importantly, WASRAG links water and sanitation to improved hygiene, better health, and empowerment of the community – especially women, irrigation and agriculture, education and literacy and, ultimately, child mortality.
