Well, fingers crossed the coldest days of winter were a few weeks ago and spring will soon be in the air.

Doesn’t time fly!  It’s hard to believe almost two months of this Rotary year has passed by.  Elaine and I are now enjoying carrying out the official club visiting programme.  Thus far we’ve met with 13 clubs and it has been a case of renewing acquaintances and meeting many new faces.  The warmth and hospitality shown to us has been overwhelming and makes visiting clubs such a memorable experience.

This method of event management is what Aaron brings to the Cycle Challenge.

During February and March Aaron joined the current Cycle Challenge Management Team and Board in a number of planning sessions that were held to scope out the look and feel of the Cycle Challenge going forward into the next several years.

This year the Cycle Challenge turns 40 and it was time for Cycle Challenge to look to the future.

Thanks to funding from central government for overseas marketing, infrastructure such as the Website have been targeted for an upgrading. [Go to:cyclechallenge.com for more]

Ed Hillary and Ron Ward. WW2 experiences in the Solomon Islands

For those following the “Hillary” documentary in TV1, they will have noticed a 30 second clip of Ed talking to a ‘Ron’. The scene related to Ed’s was war service in the Solomon Islands.

The documentary incorrectly concentrated on an incident where Ron (Ward) and Ed were in a small boat which exploded. In early 2008,

Ron spoke to the Club about his time with Ed Hillary as they flew Catalina’s together over the waters of the Solomon Islands. The talk was recorded by Janey Grant and here.  Read more...

Nineteen  members plus four guests and eight Menzshed representatives recently viewed Len, Craig and Lukas's famous stoat boxes in production at Whakatane Men's Shed.

Len has been asked to co-ordinate the Stoat Trap Project, started by Craig and Lukas, who have put an enormous amount of work into the project, as well as establishing connections with the Menzshed.

Approximately 280 boxes were sold in the past year, 70 without traps to the Regional Council. There have been teething problems, especially with the timber grooves and nails being put in the wrong place. Most problems have been sorted and the new saw will solve the groove problem.
Brian Faulkner demonstrated the stencilling of boxes and members were shown how to assemble the stoat trap boxes..

The District has arranged a comprehensive group insurance to provide cover to District Clubs, Rotarians, volunteer helpers and participants in Rotary programmes and activities, against property loss or damage, personal injury, Statutory and Officers liability, and Rotary travel.

The cover provided is relatively comprehensive and is not possible to describe the detailed provisions of the policy in this communication.

However, the following is a summary of the main features:

What else can we say?

There will be some tempting sporting memorabilia up for grabs at this year's Rotorua Charity Luncheon but then if sport's not your thing don't worry - there is something for everyone.

The event, hosted by Rotorua's Rotary clubs, will be held on November 11 at the Energy Events Centre, and will include live and silent auctions and a lunch.

Auction leader Chris Smith said there would be a signed All Blacks jersey up for grabs, signed by the championship team of 2016.

Also available will be $12,000 worth of double glazed glass for a house, supply only, from Metro Performance Glass and a car from Hyundai, though which kind is yet to be decided.

A simple concept to support a great Rotary cause led to one Weber barbeque raising more than NZ$27,000 for End Polio Now.

Matamata Rotarian Henry Clothier, a seasoned End Polio Now fundraiser donated the NZ$1000 barbeque and developed this win-win project.

The concept was simple. With the support of then District Governor Mike Smith, raffle tickets were distributed to most of the 54 clubs in District 9930. “We asked clubs to sell the tickets but instead of returning the money to Matamata Rotary, they put it towards their club’s Rotary Foundation polio giving,” Henry says.

“A number of clubs could not believe that we were willing to give the proceeds of the raffle away, so to speak, but all we really cared about was that the money went to such an important cause. This provided clubs with an added incentive to sell tickets,” he says.

With more than 4500 tickets sold, Matamata’s mayor Jan Barnes drew the winning ticket at a special club evening in June.

Well, that’s about all there is for this issue. As you can see it only one page long and that is at the request of DG Keith, who wants it short and sharp. Don’t forget that the new District website is now fully operational and you will find a plethora of information about Rotary, D9930 clubs, and all activities. Please take a good stroll through the site by clicking HERE.
