Hi $FIRST_NAME$,

Welcome to our first Atlanta Newsletter, come with us to the World Rotary Convention 2017.

Greetings,

The new Rotary year is now well underway and I trust the club leadership teams are enthusiastically settling into new their roles.

As your new District Governor team, Elaine and I treasured visiting many clubs for the first time over the last few weeks and meeting such positive and hospitable Rotarians – we felt honoured.  We’ve been to our share of club changeovers and all have been special occasions, particularly witnessing the acknowledging of fellow Rotarians and community leaders for their special deeds.  So a big thank you from us for the chance to join with your clubs.

Kevyn Moore introduced Jascha as hailing from an established heritage of winemakers from West Auckland.

Jascha thanked Kevyn and Taradale Rotary for the opportunity to participate in this scholarship and went on to talk about his experience and the people, wine,
food, host families and the Italian culture. Italy has 20 wine regions producing roughly 50/50 red & white wine. Its wine harvest is 13 times larger than NZ and the Italians consume 20 times more wine. Sangiovese and Trebbiano are two of the most popular varieties.

Jascha visited the Conegliano region in Tuscany, famous for its Prosecco sparkling wine made from the Glera grape variety. Vineyards are steep with little opportunity for mechanisation, family run and managed still using very traditional methods such as tying up the vines with wooden vine material.

It is a distinguished honour for our club having received a “Priory Vote of Thanks” from the Order of St. John.

This is in recognition of the support we have offered the Order over the years culminating in the funding provided for the Health Shuttle service in 2014.

As I said at our club meeting this is a thank you to all members who in some way or another have channelled their efforts through our fundraising initiatives so that we can support community interests such as St. John in a meaningful way.

Great work and thanks to you all for your time and effort that achieved such an honour.

This epitomises what we are all about when we give back to the community the outcome of our efforts.

The new Rotary South Pacific zone website now has been launched.   This new site marks the end of an era for the old multi-district website that served  as our district web-presence for over 12 years. The new website is  www.rotaryoceania.zone

The closure of the old multi-district site cannot transpire without recognising the huge contribution of Rotarian Gavin Petrie (Fairfield) who was a pioneer in bringing our district into the world of internet technology.

Newsletter
2016 Out-bounds
Hi Everyone.

Well, where has the time gone? August is almost upon us and from reading your reports and stalking some of you on FaceBook from all accounts you are all making the most of your opportunities and enjoying a far warmer climate than us back here.

It is a good time to take stock and check that bucket list so as to make time to try and do everything that you would like to do. Remember to keep those smiley faces on and those ever important thanks you’s.

Enjoy and make the most of all the experiences that come your way. And most important, be safe out there.

Thirteen-year-old Megan Otukolo arrived with her mother Koleti on Wednesday, July 13th, from the island of Vava’u, Tonga for treatment in Southern Cross Hospital, Hamilton, by orthopaedic surgeon Dr Richard Willoughby.

Treatment required assessment of the previous trauma to Megan’s left hip and the screw that had been placed in the hip to remedy the initial trauma. The screw was found to be impinging on the acetabular rim limiting movement, creating a poor fit resulting in the head of the femur becoming misshapen over time, and causing constant pain.

The Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge will this year celebrate its 40th event. From its humble beginnings in 1977 with just 26 participants, the event has grown into NZ’s premier and largest cycling event, with around 8,000 riders from across New Zealand, and over 20 countries across the globe, taking part each year!

In 2015 the Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge was awarded Best NZ Owned Major Event by the NZ Association of Event Professionals.
Originally owned and operated by the Taupo Cycling Club, the bike event was taken over by the Rotary Club and Taupo nui–a-Tia College in 1994. This marked the beginning of a massive expansion for the event. This leadership saw the introduction of initiatives such as the relay, endurance rides, major spot prizes and bike races for professional riders.

Last weekend saw a huge effort by members of the five Rotary Clubs of Rotorua joining forces to raise the profile of Rotary with a stand at the Home & Leisure Show. The show was held 15 – 17 July at the Rotorua Energy Events Centre.

It provided a wonderful platform for connecting with the Rotorua community, having conversations about the causes we target to maximise our local and global impact through our differing occupations, cultures, and life experiences that give us a unique perspective. Our shared passion for service helps us accomplish the remarkable!

Learn more about Rotary with Rotary Learning & Information: Sunday 21 August in Taupo

Are you still fairly new to Rotary and sometimes wonder what there is to know about this huge organisation?  Or are you an enthusiastic Rotarian who’s interested in exploring what other opportunities exist within Rotary?  Or do you just love to meet other Rotarians and swap ideas about thriving clubs, great project ideas, and people having fun in Rotary?

Either way, you would get all of these by coming to Rotary Learning and Information.  This is a one-day programme that covers multiple topics about Rotary, for people who have been in Rotary from 3 days to 30 years.  Your club is encouraged to sponsor you (that means we’ll invoice them, not you).  The modules cover three main topics: Leadership, Service, and Membership, and build on each other through Levels 1, 2, & 3.

Well, that’s about all there is for this issue. As you can see it only one page long and that is at the request of DG Keith, who wants it short and sharp. Don’t forget that the new District website is now fully operational and you will find a plethora of information about Rotary, D9930 clubs, and all activities. Please take a good stroll through the site by clicking HERE.
