'Ladies' Day' is Theatre Hawke's Bay's
first production for 2017.
The nobs heading north for Royal Ascot will no doubt be wondering who they may find themselves rubbing
shoulders with. And here's the answer -‐ four lasses from a
fish-processing plant in Hull, gambling, giggling and being sick into their hats.
Pearl (Clair Rochester) is celebrating early retirement and has always wanted to go to Ladies Day at Royal Ascot; Linda (Kyla Andersen) is a sweet, shy girl who is obsessed with the songs of Tony Christie; Jan (Sandra Alsleben) is keeper of the picnic hamper from Hell, while blonde Shelley (Lynda Corner) with a robust northern accent, is determined to crash the Royal Enclersure for a glimpse of Camilla Parker-Berles. A slightly outnumbered Neil McKorkell does a great job playing all the blerkes.
The play manages to be more than a bunch of cheap laughs.
It is funny and poignant and the characters are very familiar.
Even the blerkes will enjoy it.
Get the gang together in your “day at the races” finery to really get in the mood (hats within reason for visabilty).
