Greetings fellow Rotarians,

With almost half of the Club visits completed, I continue to be amazed by the enthusiasm and commitment to Rotary and Making a Difference.

Governor-Elect Training/Institute/Future Leaders Symposium

Membership – “Rotary is at a crossroads“ was the message that John Hewko,  General Secretary of Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation, had for Rotarians at the Governors Elect Training and Institute in Auckland in mid-September.  John challenged Rotarians throughout New Zealand to try new ways of addressing the decline in membership, to test different ways of meetings and ask the tough question “Why Rotary is not attracting more members?”
With membership central to Rotary’s strategic plan, there is now a suite of online membership courses available in Rotary’s Learning Centre to assist clubs in strengthening their membership, on the following membership topics:
  • Is your Club Healthy?
  • Online Membership Leads
  • Building a Diverse Club
  • Practicing Flexibility & Innovation’
  • Kick Start your New Member Orientation
  • Strategies for Attracting New members
  • Best Practices for Engaging Members

And don’t forget our District Membership Challenge.  No application form is required; just simply email rogerm1945@xtra.co.nz  by 5th October 2017 to indicate that your Club will accept the challenge.
Future Leaders – there was a critical mass of Rotarians who enthusiastically embraced the theme of "be the future"  with speakers who informed, entertain and encourage us all to think about how we can “Be The Future” of Rotary. All the speakers and each session of the programme achieved this in different ways, through panel discussions on the future of Rotary, round-table conversations generating great ideas to take Rotary forward and amazing guest speakers – two who particularly impressed me and gave me a lot to think about were Ray Davis from Team NZ and Panni Paslasi, a Budapest refugee and peace advocate.

POLIO $’s NEED TO KEEP COMING!
The fact that we are almost at the end of the road simply increases the need for funding to make sure the ‘job is done’.
However, it was disappointing 11 cases of polio have been reported so far this year, against 23 at the same time last year.  There have been no more cases in Nigeria for over twelve months; Pakistan and Afghanistan are the final barriers to rid our world of this debilitating disease.
This emphasises the need to be diligent in raising the awareness of polio and the need to continue our fundraising efforts to make sure we get to our target of 1.5 US billion dollars.
Thank you for your continuing support of the Rotary Foundation to Make a Difference to ending this crippling disease.
World Polio Day (WPD) – 24 October 2017

We also have the opportunity to host a Polio Movie in November New Orient Express (See October issue Rotary Down Under).  This movie will appeal to so many people and I encourage Clubs to take full advantage by inviting friends, neighbours and family. The movie night is a great way to structure your event for World Polio Day just prior to the screenings. WPD is on October 24 and clubs can record their involvement in the movie night as a World Polio Day event. Make sure you record your involvement in the Rotary International online system.

Please keep up your commitment and enthusiasm for Rotary - together we will be Making a Difference in 2017/2018
Yours in Rotary
