In February of this year, it was announced that the J R McKenzie Trust was awarding scholarships for young people to attend a 21-day Outward Bound ‘Mind, Body and Soul’ course, to be held in July, at Anakiwa in the Marlborough Sounds.

Each of the 54 clubs in our Rotary district was invited to nominate a candidate, of which 3 young people were selected. Our club nominated Ashleigh-
Rose Moeke. Ashleigh-Rose topped the list of the successful candidates. The $4,000-course fee was paid by the J R McKenzie Trust, whilst this club provided airfares and other transport. Ashleigh who is 16 years old, lives in Waimarama and is a student at Havelock North High School told us apart the experience.

David Smith thanks the guest speakers, Madison, Nathan, and Ashleigh-Rose.

She took part with 110 other students. She was in a watch with 13 others. She was truly inspired by the experience and said it will help her reach her potential and become a better and stronger person. She took part in many activities which helped her confidence grow. The tramp was challenging and she liked kayaking. The course helped her face challenges but she had help from others and the encouragement from other members and the instructors was valued.

She has experienced an enormous boost to her confidence as a result of attending the course. She said without the sponsorship she couldn't have gone. She expressed her thanks to
Rotary and the JR McKenzie Trust for assisting her. Each year the Rotary Summer Science and Technology Forum is held at Auckland University. 22 places are available for students nominated by Rotary Clubs in our district. Our club nominated two very talented Havelock North High School Students and both were accepted. Attending this seminar is a serious commitment for students, for not only do they have to give up two weeks of their summer vacation but they also have to earn the money to pay half of the $1,750 fee – the balance of which is paid by the nominating club.

The two students who attended, Madison Chu and Nathan Miller both live in Havelock North  and are currently in year 13. Madison is currently the Head Girl of Havelock North High School.
Both Madison and Nathan gave a very interesting power point presentation of the forum and they were both exposed to the entire picture of the world of science from robotics, crime scene forensics, aquatic fluorescence, Computer Assisted Design, physics, and chemistry. Both experienced university life and the forum helped them challenge their thoughts on their future education in science and technology. They enjoyed the social aspects including the formal dinner and cultural activities and of teamwork in activities like trampolining, rock climbing and volleyball.

They both gained in confidence and improved their self-belief helped by the role models and inspiration by their leaders. As well as learning leadership skills, they made connections with other students from all around New Zealand. They said they will treasure the memories of the forum forever and both thanked Rotary for the opportunity to attend.
