Ahuriri Sunrise and the Fiji Water and Sanitation Project
Providing clean reticulated water supplies to communities, primarily focused in the Pacific Islands, and creating opportunities for Rotarians to become personally involved as well as for individual and groups of clubs to participate.
A project to serve 7 villages on the Fijian Island of Taveuni, has been completed and is making a significant difference to the lives and living conditions for 500 people.
We have another two projects for the 2014-15 year which involve installing spouting and piping to catch rain water and run it to four plastic tanks at the Vuna primary school, and to provide toilet blocks.
We also plan to upgrade the water supply at the Tutu Mission which accommodates about 70 students, houses for permanent staff, workshops, plant nurseries, administration and local housing.
Water projects need to be designed, schedules of materials prepared and arrangements for installation and project management. Involvement of the local beneficiaries is critical. They also need local champions in whom we can have confidence. NZ Rotarians often go on site to participate with installation, commissioning and the initial operation.
This is an opportunity for you or your club to be involved in an international project. We need people with engineering, plumbing design skills for the preliminary stages of scope and design. The assignments are on a voluntary basis at the individual’s cost, but the involvement in a project of this sort can be hugely rewarding.

At the international level, the Water and Sanitation Rotary Action Group (WASRAG) has been involved in facilitating over 200 projects in the Asian and African continents.
